Madrid Local Haunts | Vailima

By Barbara Franco

Vailima is a beautiful tea room and is in a privileged area, in front of the Puerta de Alcalá and the Retiro, one of the most important and visited parks of the city.

The Belle Epoque decoration, with checkerboard floors, wood furniture, toile du jour curtains, and white brick walls, literally transport you to a Parisian tea room. The atmosphere is very nice, with jazz music playing, perfect for a relaxed afternoon after a visit to the Retiro or shopping in the Salamanca neighborhood.

It is a real sanctuary for tea lovers as they have more than 150 varieties. Black, green, white, Roiboos and mate tea, from China, India, Vietnam or Laos. There’s even a wide range from the famous Maison Theodor. It is possible to shop all their teas to enjoy them at home as well.

All the pastries are homemade and you can choose between a wide range of sweets: croissants, pain au chocolat, scones, macarons, muffins, cupcakes or cakes. But without a doubt, however, the carrot cake is something you can’t miss. It is very tasty and with the perfect amount of frosting.
